Marginal Abatement Cost Curves for Latin American dairy production: A Costa Rica case study
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study utilises data collected from Costa Rican dairy farmers to conduct a cradle farm gate Life Cycle Assessment and the first Marginal Abatement Cost Curve (MACC) for production in Latin America. Ninety farms across five typologies were assessed, reflecting Rica's diverse agroclimatic zones varying degrees of dairy/beef specialisation. The efficacy cost-effectiveness specific mitigation measures depend on typology, but several promising technologies are identified that increase efficiency whilst substantially reducing emissions most – particular, improve animal health pasture quality. Pasture synergistic with silvopastoral practises highly effective at emission mitigation, although relatively expensive. replacement lower quality by-product feeds high concentrate feed is cost-effective measure level, reductions could be negated by indirect land use change outside scope MACC analyses. Achieving carbon neutrality level not likely possible farms, exception extensive typologies. Not all suitable every context, additional policy support will needed offset financial technical challenges related adoption. Results this tropical constrained lack high-resolution data, they highlight need farm-typology-specific recommendations. Overall, there potential improvement mitigate globally significant contribution American livestock climate change.

متن کاملA Methodology for Constructing Marginal Abatement Cost Curves for Climate Action in Cities
As drivers of climate action, cities are taking measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which if left unabated pose a challenge to meeting long-term climate targets. The economics of climate action needs to be at the forefront of climate dialogue to prioritize investments among competing mitigation measures. A marginal abatement cost (MAC) curve is an effective visualization of clima...
متن کاملThe Case of Costa Rica
In this paper, I discuss the reasons for Costa Rica’s economic performance over the last quarter of a century. Three complementary sets of policies (investments in human capital, careful stabilization, and an intelligent and aggressive integration into the world economy) explain the successful trends, and can be thought of—at least in hindsight—as a development strategy. While fruitful, this st...
متن کاملOn the Robustness of Marginal Abatement Cost Curves: The Influence of World Energy Prices
Since the study of Ellerman and Decaux (1998) marginal abatement cost curves (MACCs) have become one of the favorite instruments to analyze the impacts of the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol and emission trading. This paper shows that the MACC in one country depends via the link of world energy prices on the level of abatement in the rest of the world. The strength of the dependence is inf...
